Ways to price your art

There are different ways of deciding how to price your artwork. If you are new to the art world and aren’t sure of the market value of your art, you may want to act like a retailer would, or even test out different price points and see how they are received. The varied approach may also work for established artists, or alternatively utilise the price points of previous sales.

For artists fresh to art sales

  1. To act like a retailer, set your price at double the cost of materials. Or alternatively, times your total hours by your hourly rate, and add that to your cost of materials.

  2. Research other artists working in similar mediums and sizes, and base your price on what they have sold their art for.

  3. Test drive different price points, and alter them according to buyer response.

For artists with a sales record

  1. Base your price on previous sales and exhibitions. However, be aware in fluctuations in the market and adjust your prices accordingly.

  2. Test drive different price points, and alter them according to buyer response.
