Question: What do you specifically do to capture the natural atmosphere of Canadian landscapes?
I love spending time outdoors, embracing all the seasons Muskoka offers. As my family and I explore the incredible spaces near our home and during our travels across Canada, I'm constantly capturing photos. These inevitably find their way into my paintings and hold special meaning because they bring me back to the special memories and time spent with family and friends.
Question: What inspired you in Muskoka to create artwork based on the natural landscapes there?
There are so many hidden gems around the area. Just when I think I’ve seen all of the beautiful spots, I am told about new places I haven’t yet explored. With lakes, forests, trails, waterfalls, and lookouts the sources of beauty are endless. Because I gain such peace and serenity when I am in nature, I feel inspired to share these moments and memories with my viewers so that they too can bring their memories of nature’s wild places home.
Question: How does the acrylic paint capture the sense of movement in your work?
I began my painting journey using mostly oil paints but have recently switched to acrylics because they dry much quicker and are easier to work back into right away. My art explores the interplay between positive spaces, such as trees, and negative spaces, like the areas surrounding them. Acrylics allow me to paint my first layers with expressive brushstrokes capturing the movement of the trees, wind, clouds and water, and then work right back in around those with my second layers as soon as I wish, thanks to the rapid drying of the initial layers. They also encourage me to work quickly and expressively which I think gives each piece a feeling of vibrancy and life, thus capturing the essence of the outdoors.
Question: What advice would you give an aspiring young artist?
I would encourage aspiring artists to play a lot. It’s in this process of letting go and experimenting with mediums and subject matter where we begin to find our voice, and a path that lights us up allowing us to stay true to ourselves. Another thing that helps with a growth journey is to create a lot of smaller pieces early on. This approach accelerates the learning and development curve, facilitating a smoother transition to larger works with a solid foundation of practice and skills already in place. Additionally, putting yourself out there and making connections with other artists and art enthusiasts also provides priceless sources of support, feedback, and opportunities for collaboration. And finally and most importantly, have fun! There will inevitably be ups and downs, but each piece you create is a reflection of your journey and your identity as an artist - and that is a beautiful thing.

Question: What inspired you to get into landscape photography?
I was inspired to get into landscape photography 6 years ago, when I bought my first DSLR camera. Growing up in northern Ontario, I have always admired the landscape of this beautiful province. I remember a Grade 13 Geography field trip to Tobermory and taking a great picture of the Grotto on an inexpensive disposable film camera. Since then, I have always been captivated with landscape photography.
Question: When taking photos, where is your favourite place you have explored? And why?
My favourite place to explore for taking photos is, by far, the Algonquin Park area. Algonquin Park is such a vast environment that you could visit and photograph and never get the same photo twice. As you travel along Highway 60, from the west gate to the east gate, there is even a noticeable change in the vegetation, offering so many exciting landscape photo opportunities.
Question : What is the key to capturing the beauty of landscape in photography?
I don’t believe there is a specific key to capturing the beauty of a landscape in photography. Sure, there is composition, light, colour and mood. But, I think “beauty is in the eye of the beholder”. It is subjective. One landscape photo might be beautiful to one and not so agreeable to another.
Question : What are you most excited for during the Serene Exhibit?
I am most excited to see my work actually printed and hung on the wall at the Serene Exhibit. I am looking forward to my family and friends viewing my work on display at the opening reception.
Jesse Frybot
Question: What inspired you to start photography?
A lot of my inspiration came from YouTube and Instagram. Seeing these photographers and video creators share their journey and work really encouraged me to want to do the same.
Question: What advice would you give someone just starting out in photography?
Find people who inspire you and build community with other photographers. I have met a lot of amazingly talented people who's work motivated me to push beyond my creative boundaries.
Question: How is landscape photography different from other types of photography?
Landscape photography has always taken me to destinations beyond the backdrops and lighting. I would say it's different in that it makes you want to travel and capture a corner of the world you feel should be shared.
Question : What would be your dream landscape to photograph?
I'd really like to photograph Iceland. It's a place that has interested me for a while and I plan on making a trip out there in the future.
Katherine Muir Miller
Question: What elements are important for you to capture when painting your pieces?
The elements that are important to me are whatever I decide I want to Stand in the landscape. I will focus in on a certain focal point and want to bring that to the viewers attention . It’s a decision I choose before even starting the painting of what I want to capture in each particular scene.
Question: In your biography you spoke about colour being a driving force in your paintings, why is that?
Colour is by far my most driving force . I call myself both realism and impressionistic in nature.
My paintings are of a certain place in Canada and when there is a connection from a viewer in recognizing it, it brings great joy.. that is is the realistic portion. I like to bring the place (subject matter ) to life by using color. , by my impression . I decide on the season it will be, I see a palette of vibrant color and I paint it. I like to think outside the box in life and through my art. I therefore often mix colors one would not often think of , making it work and come together. I love color , I prepare all my colors for each painting before I even start the painting . I visualize it all on the canvas and become so excited about this process . I will sometimes spend 8!hours making color .
Question: What advice would you give to an artist who wants to capture the beauty of a Canadian landscape?
Capturing the beauty to me, is taking it all in, then cropping it, zooming in, imagining, and focusing on what your subject matter is first and foremost.
That is what I paint first
I paint my sky last because once the subject matter is done, it navigates to much exploration out in the sky.
Question : What inspired you to start your painting journey?
It was just an outlet at first , but I loved it. It was a second career for me being an ER nurse first. I kept very active in life (hockey, skiing , canoeing etc) and was always outdoors with my five kids. Through various teachers and mentors , I became obsessed , throwing away painting after painting at first as I was never happy. Then as I started to accomplish a sense of content and accomplishment I started to take my time. Ones encouraged by teachers to consider pursuing this new found talent . Once I believed in myself , my passion became reality. I finally opened my own gallery. So basically, I’m inspired by Canada, its seasons , its changes and vast landscape

Question: How does your artwork step into a state of serenity?
When I am at the water’s edge I am instantly calmed. Even the energetic ferocity of the water and sky on a windy day performs a type of therapy for me. Through my art, I aim to share with the viewer a similar state of serenity.
Question: Most of your work is based on the dynamic qualities of water, what specifically draws you to the element?
Water is a life-giving source. Its symbolism and its universal soothing quality are connected to being in the womb. This connection, however, is subconscious. I’ve always been drawn to the water, even as a child. As an artist, I have become intrigued by its ability to change colour, direction, and energy in a moment. I am enamored by its reflection of the sky and surroundings. As a result, I feel compelled to translate that dynamism through my mixed media use and imagery, specifically by using modeling paste to create energetic surfaces and pouring medium to produce a reflective sheen.
Question : What advice would you give a young and aspiring artist?
Don’t be afraid of constructive feedback. You can’t grow without it. Apply to as many shows and calls. And if you are rejected, ask to have an interview to review your portfolio… and listen to their advice. Grow, grow, grow… but don’t lose your voice. Just fine tune what you have to say.
Question : Describe your creative process when working on a piece.
Photographing when inspiration hits is always my starting point. When shooting, I consider how I might be able to incorporate the texture of modeling paste, cheesecloth and pouring medium into the composition.
I start my paintings with a delicate contour drawing that I use as a guide. I build up my textural surface using modeling paste and cheesecloth applied with dynamic gestures that emulate the energy of the water and sky. I paint the imagery using acrylics. I then use tinted pouring medium as a final step, where I pour pools and gestural drips across the canvas to create a reflective surface that plays on the interaction between light and water.

Question : What inspired you to get into photography?
I wanted to record scenes that people would not ordinarily notice. There are so many familiar images out there of the same locations photographed over and over again; I suppose I wanted to prove that it is just as possible to create something magical from somewhere close to home.
Question : What influences you to edit your photography to be black and white?
Form, texture, and light creates mood, emotion, and feeling. For me this is only possible when a photograph is stripped of colour; bright, saturated colours distract the viewer's attention from the message that I'm trying to convey. I also like the challenge of trying to create a compelling, eye-catching photograph from grey tones alone.
Question: If you could photograph anywhere in the world, what would your dream place be?
The Scottish Highlands and Islands. There are more lone trees than I could possibly wish for.
Question: In your biography you spoke about photography being ‘an ideal way of slowing down the pace of modern life.’ How do you specifically capture that in your work?
The photographs that I take require a lot of patience. I often have to wait for the light to change, or for the clouds to move across the sky to provide the right backdrop for the landscape. Sometimes I have to return to the same location over and over again, just to make sure I have the conditions that I'm looking for or to exhaust all the possibilities. I would not be able to do this unless I made a conscious effort to switch from my active working life to taking a slower, more contemplative perspective on the world. Taking these kinds of photographs also forces you to pay attention to the unchanging rhythms of life, such as the sun's passage across the sky each day, and the changing of the seasons.
Daniel Ross
Question : Why do you use oil paint as your preferred art medium?
Why oil... I paint with oil as it allows me to be flexible, rework and the time and patience to do so. Also the tactile nature and richness of it as well.
Question: What mood and undertones do you focus on capturing when creating your artwork?
Moods and undertones are an exploratory retelling and regaining a somewhat sombre experience and bringing it light if possible.
Question: What is your favourite part of the creative process when creating an art piece?
My favourite part of the creative process is the chance to bring a visual to my story and the playing with the materials to get there.
Question : What advice would you give a young aspiring artist?
My advice is simple for a young artist...stick with it, be true to your vision when its not received and keep ploughing the field everyday!.

TATIANA CAMPBELL
Q: You mentioned in your artist's statement that you are inspired by the "vibrant beauty of sunrise and sunset". Would you be able to expand on that? What is it about these times that you find so inspiring?
A: The vibrant beauty of sunrise and sunset has always been a profound inspiration for me. There is something magical about the ever-changing hues that dance across the sky, painting it in a captivating array of colours. The warm, golden light that envelops everything during these moments brings peace and serenity, connecting me deeply with nature. It's as if time pauses, allowing me to witness the world awaken or bid adieu gently and tranquilly. Capturing these mesmerizing scenes through my camera lens will let me freeze these fleeting moments, preserving their ethereal essence forever. With each photograph, I hope to share the profound beauty and evoke a sense of wonder that I experience during these extraordinary times of the day.
Q: Do you find it stressful to shoot at sunrise and sunset since there is a built-in time limit of sorts, and the longer you wait, the more your shot will change?
A: Capturing the vibrant beauty of sunrises and sunsets has become my peaceful escape, free from any stress or constraints. While time may be limited to capture that perfect shot, I find solace in knowing that even if something doesn't come out as intended, I can rely on apps and tools to enhance the image creatively. Whether adding a burst of colour to intensify the atmosphere or tweaking the shape of the sun to create a dreamy effect, I embrace my artistic freedom to craft the image that reflects the beauty I see. Through this process, I connect with nature more deeply, infusing it with my personal touch.
Q: Many of your photos also play with reflections in water. Do you have any tips or advice for photographers looking to get the most out of shooting near a body of water?
A: There is something mesmerising about capturing reflections in water, which is an incredibly rewarding part of my photographic journey. Regarding shooting reflections, I've discovered the best tips and tricks that have helped me achieve the best result: always looking for calm days with minimal wind, which allows the water's surface to remain undisturbed, creating a mirror-like effect. Additionally, I often seek out smaller bodies of water, such as ponds or tranquil lakes, as they produce clearer and more distinct reflections. However, the magic doesn't stop there! I also enjoy the creative aspect of post-processing, where I incorporate apps and tools to enhance the reflection as part of my editing process. Whether adding a touch of vibrance or experimenting with different filters, playing with reflections in post-processing is a part of the journey I truly enjoy.
Q: What inspires you about the vibrant colours that you photograph?
A: Exploring vibrant colours in photography has become a wonderful source of inspiration for me. While I may feel nervous and shy when it comes to dressing myself in colour, there is undeniable magic in capturing and embracing the vivid hues through the lens of my camera. Looking at colourful images instantly brightens my mood and fills me with joy and excitement. It's as if no mistakes can be made when working with vibrant photography colours- they radiate happiness and bring lively energy to every image. Not only does it evoke a positive emotional response within me, but it also has the power to uplift and bring joy to those who view my photographs. It's remarkable to know that something as simple as a burst of colour can profoundly impact our well-being.
RACHEL SHEPPARD
Q: As a self-taught photographer, what motivated you and what resources did you use to improve your photography over time?
A: What motivated me the most was my family and friends, they are the ones that kept supporting my photography journey which kept me going and I just didn’t want to give up. Over time, I just expanded my knowledge by watching tutorials from some of my favourite photographers and learning different techniques. I eventually put those skills and everything I learned from the community to use - there was lots of trial and error!
Q: You have said that you have travelled all over Ontario for the perfect shot. Is there any particular spot where you find the most inspiration?
A: I haven’t really found inspiration in one certain place but I have noticed I find myself anywhere there is water, lots of open space, wooded areas, unique structures and landscapes. I am more often than not exploring the Muskoka area or the Toronto area, so I guess anywhere my camera takes me.
Q: You have mentioned that you had an artistic childhood. How does this influence your work now as an adult?
A: I grew up loving to draw and paint a lot, I always had an eye for art. In my work now as an adult, I try to look at and capture everything from a creative perspective.
Q: What is it about nature that inspires you the most?
A: Nature inspires me in so many ways. I am obsessed with the constant changing of seasons, colours, and landscapes. When I am in nature, it’s never a boring or dull moment.
EDDIE CHAN
Q: Many of your photos showcase the CN Tower. Is there something specific about the CN Tower that draws your attention?
A: I love aligning the moon and the sun and since the CN Tower is so prominent to the city, it’s a natural subject matter. It’s sometimes very hard to resist having the Tower in any cityscape because it is so synonymous with Toronto. But using it to show the scale of the moon and sun is something that is just too hard to resist.
Q: Your photos have a lot of depth to them, and you make great use of the foreground, middle, and background. How do you go about deciding on the composition of these photos, and how you’ll utilize depth?
A: This question is very much a compliment to me. I have always felt that I struggled with incorporating foreground in my photos and that I tend to ‘see it….shoot it.’ It has taken a lot of effort to slow down and try to incorporate as much foreground as possible. Photographers never stop learning so this for me has been a learning process.
All photographers have a different eye. Some see things very wide and as a result love shooting with wide-angle lenses. My eye tends to want to see things up close. So using a telescopic lens is a natural fit for me. As a result, I love having a lot of depth in my photos.
Q: You have a good balance of cityscape and nature-based photography, do you have a preference between the two? If so, why?
A: Photography takes a lot of time that we do not all have. Living in Toronto means the city is always close by and thus makes it easier to photograph. Other nature-based locations require a bit of a longer drive. So really how much time I have will dictate where I go to shoot. Also, the time of year dictates where I go. Heading away from the city during Autumn to capture the Fall Colours is simply a must-do. So really, time and time of year dictate many of my shooting locations.
Q: Do you have a favourite spot in the city, whether that be to photograph or to just go and enjoy it?
A: The Toronto islands are my favourite spot in the city. The view of the city can’t be beaten and it really has a feeling of being away from the city even though it’s only a ten-minute ferry ride away. Whether it’s being on a beach, taking amusement rides, or having a quiet picnic with friends, the Islands have it all. It’s a pure gem.
PATRICK KILBURN
Q: Some of your photos play with colour in an interesting way, by making everything black and white except for a specific colour. What inspired this style?
A: I began to take notice of 'colour splash' photos being shared by other artists some years ago, and really liked how they immediately drew my eye to the subject in the image. Then I began to look through my portfolio to see what works of mine might 'fit'. It's a fun challenge to isolate some element (umbrellas, for example) in a photo, so on occasion, I like to create a different spin of an otherwise 'normal' photo in this way.
Q: You clearly enjoy trying out multiple styles in your work and aren’t afraid to be experimental. What inspires you to push your boundaries and try these different styles?
A: I like to think of my journey into photography as a kind of ongoing artistic exploration. By challenging myself to capture and edit images in different ways, in different settings, using different techniques, etc, I feel this helps me to really enjoy this artform. I also believe this encourages me to try to 'see' the world around me more completely and perhaps objectively.
Q: In your artist statement, you connected “Intersections” with the idea of connecting with your fellow creatives. Have you had any interactions with other local artists that have shaped your style?
A: Absolutely!! Especially since jumping on social media channels... I've gotten to know fellow creatives online, and better yet, I've met people in person and made good friends along the way. Each person I've 'intersected' with in some way has introduced me to their unique style and vision for their own work. I've learned much - both creatively and technically - from many in our photography community. Showcasing my work alongside my peers, each of whom have their unique artistic expression to display is such a great example of a great way to connect with others. If you ask me - 'Intersection' as a theme name is just so appropriate for a group exhibition like this one!
Q: You mentioned that you grew up loving photography and watching your father develop film. How did growing up with art affect your relationship with photography now?
A: Honestly, this for me is a tough question to answer, as I've very recently lost my father. But rather than asking to avoid it, I'll choose instead to take this question on. My dad introduced me to his enthusiasm for film photography as a youngster. But he also shared his love of visual arts and music, as well as his talents for copywriting and graphic design. I pay homage to him now by expressing how much I appreciate that I grew up with all of these things. I believe that my interest and growth as a creative stems from early and sustained exposure over the years to the arts in general - photography especially. Thanks, Dad.
ANASTASIIA KHVOSTYK
Q: You mention in your artist’s statement that you believe everything around you, from skyscrapers to untouched nature, has its own beauty. How do you go about determining the best way to capture each subject?
A: I believe in finding the unique beauty in everything around me. When I take pictures, I carefully look at what makes each thing special. I observe its unique features, think about how the light hits it, and consider the surroundings. Understanding what makes something beautiful helps me decide on the best way to take its picture – like the angle, composition, and lighting. When the subject is captivating and beautiful, I don't rely on special angles or tricks. The true challenge is discovering those unique places and being patient, because, in my opinion, not every scene is worth sharing.
Q: Many of your photos do a very good job of highlighting the massive scale of your subjects, be it mountains or skyscrapers. What is it about these enormous landmarks that draw your attention?
A: The magnificence of nature and the impressive architecture of skyscrapers are both fascinating to me. It's the sheer size of these landmarks that grabs my attention. Whether it's a natural wonder or something humans have built, I enjoy trying to capture their bigness in a photo and make people feel amazed when they see it.
Q: Do you prefer shooting in urban settings, where there can be more elements outside of your control, or out in nature where there are fewer people who could affect your work?
A: I like taking pictures in nature because it's not spoiled by human changes. While there are fewer people around to influence my work, there are also elements beyond my control, like unpredictable weather or how the sunlight plays with the landscape. Despite these challenges, they contribute to the uniqueness of each image. Encountering wild animals in their natural habitat adds an extra layer of rarity and distinctiveness to my work.
Q: Are there any milestones in your career to date that you are particularly proud of?
A: I take great pride in the international recognition of my photography, especially when featured in renowned publications such as National Geographic and Canadian Geographic. Furthermore, I'm proud to mention that two of my works received an Honorable Mention in the International Photography Awards, marking a notable accomplishment. Being chosen as the "Photo of the week" in Canadian Geographic and participating in the Twist Gallery exhibition in Toronto are significant milestones in my career. These experiences highlight the impact and acclaim my work has earned, motivating me to continue exploring and sharing my passion for photography.
DISHA SACHDEVA
Q: Many of your photos capture iconic Toronto landmarks. Do you feel the city is an inspiration for your work? Do you feel you’re able to see things differently as someone who only moved here a few years ago?
A: Yes, absolutely. Moving to Toronto has had a profound impact on my artistic perspective. The city's iconic landmarks serve as constant inspiration for my photography. The dynamic energy of Toronto, with its blend of modern architecture and historical sites, provides a rich canvas for creativity.
Having relocated here just a few years ago, I bring a fresh set of eyes to the cityscape. The novelty of experiencing Toronto for the first time allowed me to see things differently and appreciate the unique character of each landmark. Toronto's diverse neighborhoods, and the ever-changing urban landscape have become integral to my photographic narrative.
Q: Several of your photos have a serene quality to them, despite being shot in a major metropolis. How do you convey that sense of calmness while being in such a hectic setting?
A: Thank you for noticing that! One of the aspects I find most fascinating about photography is the ability to capture moments of serenity even in the midst of a bustling metropolis. It's a deliberate choice in my approach to convey a sense of calmness.
I believe that every city has hidden pockets of tranquility, and my goal is to seek out and highlight those moments. Whether it's the soft glow of early morning light casting long shadows on a quiet street or finding a peaceful oasis within the urban chaos, I am drawn to scenes that offer a reprieve from the hectic pace of city life.
Ultimately, it's about finding balance and beauty in the everyday scenes of a major metropolis, inviting viewers to pause and appreciate the quiet moments that coexist with the city's vibrant energy.
Q: You’ve shot in several different cities, do you feel that each city is able to offer something unique as a subject? How do you go about finding what makes each city special?
A: Certainly, each city has its own unique personality and charm that I find endlessly inspiring. One of the most rewarding aspects of photography for me is discovering and capturing what makes each city special. When I approach shooting in a new city, I first immerse myself in its culture, history, and everyday life. It's about understanding the pulse of the city and identifying the elements that set it apart. Local architecture, street life, cultural events, and even the way people interact with their surroundings all contribute to the unique character of a place
Lighting also plays a crucial role in capturing a city's unique atmosphere. Whether it's the warm glow of sunset reflecting off skyscrapers or the play of shadows in narrow alleys, I strive to showcase the interplay between light and the urban environment.
Q: Do you have a favourite spot in the city, whether that be to photograph or to just go and enjoy it?
A: I have a few - Toronto Music Garden, Ontario Place, Lakeshore and Core Downtown.
DONIA ABOUDAN
Q: As a Toronto-based artist, where within the city do you find most of your inspiration?
A: I consider Toronto as a core of inspiration. Every area here has its own identity; every street tells a story, every lakeshore and park illustrates its own peace, which inspires me the way I need. From my point of view, I see that what you want to shoot depends on your emotions.
Q: Do you have a favourite spot in the city, whether that be to photograph or to just go and enjoy it?
A: Most of the time I love taking pictures in Downtown Toronto because I can capture whatever I want; compositions and streets especially on rainy nights. I see this as containing a fabulous charm with a remarkable harmony associated with lights and reflections. I also enjoy the Harbour Front. It’s one of my favourite spots, indeed.
Q: Your photos alternate between broad sweeping views of the busy intersections and intimate shots of specific streets and alleys. Do you have a preference between the two, and if so, why?
A: As an artist with a keen eye for details, my signature in my pictures usually demonstrates a unique combination between intimate shots and compositions. Whenever my eyes catch the exact structure, I automatically start to design the scene and frame it perfectly in a way that matches my vision. A lot of times when I like a place, I will wait for hours until the moment I want to catch is happening. Once I get what I am looking for, I will start to work on editing to give it the mood I have seen in my imagination, and this is exactly what gives my picture a special identity.
Q: As someone who’s photographed several cities around the world, do you feel that seeing these locations have changed how you view Toronto?
A: Well, I strongly believe that shooting in different cities has enriched my vision in many ways. In my opinion, the cool dance between cities and travelling shows how these places are more than just dots on a map. They're like big, open books waiting for us to explore, influencing how we see things and filling us with stories and experiences that stick with us. Absolutely, that positively affected the way I see Toronto. I usually capture distinctive perspectives and frame them into outstanding compositions. Also, I could change the picture mood and make the audience see Toronto; but they feel it looks like somewhere else. This is the most exciting part for me!
Note from the Artist:
What I want the audience to know about me as an artist is that I am the type of person who can not perform without passion. In other words; whenever I follow my passion, I will produce the best work quality. I look to combine my profession in Architecture and my passion by joining an advertising department in an Architectural firm or real state agency. Hopefully, a tourism firm in Toronto; as a photographer and video editor serving the advertising criteria. Maybe even to work in Hollywood one day!
MEGHAN POLLOCK
Q: When you prepare for a shoot, do you scout locations in advance, or do you grab a camera and wait until something inspires you in the moment?
A: I’ve gotten into the habit of carrying my camera with me almost everywhere, so many of my photos are taken on the go as I move through life. When I’m driving, I see all sorts of cool things that I’d like to shoot and I try to make a mental note of the locations so that I can come back and capture them when I’m not in transit. I’m fairly new to photography and have only had my camera for a little over two years, during which time I haven’t travelled much, so I also have a long list of destinations I’d like to get to as a photographer rather than just as a tourist.
Q: You describe yourself as a “Lover of birds, bees and buildings.” How do you balance nature and cityscape in your photography?
A: I’ve always been enchanted by the dance of opposites and find that my lens gravitates to juxtapositions and contrasts. Toronto, with its reputation as “a city within a park”, provides an endless source of inspiration for me. My recently published photo book, Scenes from the 6ix, delves into this unique duality of urban landscapes and green space with a series of photographs that capture the city’s colours, textures, and vibrant spirit. I was honoured to be invited to participate in Twist Gallery’s Intersections exhibition as it aligns perfectly with my thematic explorations, providing an exciting opportunity to showcase my work.
Q: There’s a wide variety of colour grading in your photos, from black and white to super vibrant. What’s the thought process behind these decisions? Do you already have an idea when you’re taking the photos, or does that all come in later?
A: My approach to photography is deeply intuitive, almost meditative. I have intense laser focus when I get into the zone while taking photos. But for me “the zone” doesn’t involve much conscious decision making. It’s almost like I go into auto-pilot, allowing my intuition to take over. I tend to be drawn to bright colours, patterns, and interconnections, and my attention often lands on what’s happening inside the space between things. I find its emptiness both calming and exciting at once, like the soft whisper of promises in your ear. While my intuition guides me during a photo session, my thinking brain is invited back into the creative process during post-production where I shape the narrative. It’s here that I refine and amplify the essence of what initially fascinated me about a subject.
Q: Do you have a favourite spot in the city, whether that be to photograph or to just go and enjoy it?
A: A hidden gem that holds a piece of my heart is the Spadina Museum right next to Casa Loma. I live nearby so I’m fortunate to be able to go there frequently. The museum’s magnificent gardens offer a sanctuary where, armed with my camera and earphones, I find joy in capturing moments and reconnecting with nature. There’s an undeniable magic in that space, making it my go-to retreat right in downtown Toronto.
New year, new exhibit! The intersection exhibit will be on display at Twist from Tuesday to Friday 11:00 am - 6:00 pm and Saturday 11:00 am - 4:00 pm, from now until January 26th!
NEW YEAR, NEW HOBBIES: TIPS FOR EXPLORING CREATIVE PURSUITS
A new year means there’s lots of new things to focus on, new ideas, new resolutions, and most importantly new hobbies! There’s no better time to start exploring new creative pursuits than at the beginning of the new year. Try things you’ve always wanted to, something you’ve been eager to do again, or something that you’ve simply never done before.
Here are some tips on how to unleash your imagination to kickstart your journey!
EXPERIMENT NEW TYPES OF ART
Here’s a little tutorial to help you get started on your first masterpiece!
When it comes to different forms of art, there is no right or wrong way to go about it. There are diverse forms of art that people can use to express themselves. Doodling can be a good start to recognize what you truly want to focus on. If you want to step out of your comfort zone and explore other options, you can try canvas art or watercolor painting, and see if that resonates with you. Another great way to learn more about art is to head to your local art gallery and take a look at some of the art pieces currently on display!
CHANGE YOUR SURROUNDINGS
Have you ever been stressed out by a sibling or friend? I think we’ve all had that happen to us, and the easiest solution for it is to just leave the room to cool down for a bit. The same concept applies to being creative, if you’re stumped on what to do, try changing your environment to get more inspiration from things around you. Taking a stroll around the park, or any scenic area, can change your whole perspective and give you a clear mind to get creative.
HEAD TO THE KITCHEN
Here’s what you’ll need!
Milk + Pudding mix
Sweet condensed milk
Vanilla extract
Frozen whipped topping
Vanilla wafers
Bananas
Creativity does not only exist in the form of art, cooking is also one of the most common creative outlets. Whether you’re trying new recipes or tackling a new cuisine, it all starts in the kitchen. Cooking can allow your thoughts to come into life, quite literally! Another great way to put cooking into use is to gather friends or family and have a potluck to enjoy each other's company and some good food!
WRITE IN A JOURNAL
When in doubt, pour your feelings out into a journal, and create your own story. The best thing about writing is that it comes with no rules, you can write whatever you want while exhibiting your creativity. Sometimes it can even be things you want to do in the near future, or simply good memories that you’ve had in the past. To give you a head start, some popular journaling topics can include — personal goals, things to improve on, or just a snippet of how the new year is treating you so far!

For over 15 years, Twist Gallery has played an integral role in enriching Toronto's vibrant cultural landscape. What began as a humble space to showcase emerging local artists has blossomed into so much more through our unwavering dedication to the arts.
Nestled within the heart of the thriving Queen West arts district, Twist Gallery was established in 2006 by visionary founder Nadia Kakridonis. Driven by a passion for championing creative voices both established and emerging, Nadia sought to nurture connections between talented individuals across disciplines. She transformed a vacant loft into a welcoming creative hub with natural light pouring through towering windows into the 5,000 square foot open concept space.
Through seamlessly integrating rotating visual displays with inspired culinary partnerships and engaging events, Twist Gallery has evolved far beyond its modest roots. Over a decade and a half, the multi-functional space has touched countless lives by facilitating weddings, conferences, galas and more infused with cultural energies. Our unwavering dedication to creative expression, culinary storytelling and bringing people together through shared appreciation of the arts has truly left an indelible mark on Toronto's flourishing cultural landscape.
Curating Dynamic Collections
Lying at the very heart of Twist Gallery are our thoughtfully curated rotating art exhibitions. For over fifteen years, Gallery Director Nadia Kakridonis has poured her soul into crafting immersive visual storytelling experiences through monthly displays.
A practiced curator with her finger on the pulse of shifting creative trends, Nadia sources compelling works from both renowned and emerging talents across diverse mediums. Through meticulous research and relationship-building within artistic networks around the world, she is adept at identifying voices that push boundaries and spark new dialogues.
Blending established names with those poised to make their marks on the international stage, each exhibition brings a fresh perspective. Solo retrospectives provide intimate glimpses into artists' evolution while themed group shows bring together pieces in ways that uncover unexpected connections. Multimedia installations transform perceptions by integrating visuals with other sensory experiences.

Our space allows us to seamlessly combine visual art with hospitality. Whether it's a small wedding held amongst curated artwork or a business meeting that incorporates a rotating art exhibit, Twist Gallery provides a creative backdrop. Conversations may flow more freely as topics represented in diverse artworks are reconsidered. Attendees may gain fresh insights or make unexpected connections. Appreciation builds as local artists are featured.

Credit: https://www.quiet-corner.com/
Creating a homemade Christmas wreath is a wonderful way to add a personal touch to your holiday decorations. You can design a wreath that matches your home's decor, and it's a fun DIY project to get into the festive spirit.
For this you’ll need,
Wreath Base: You can use a foam wreath base, a wire wreath frame, or even make your own by bending a wire coat hanger into a circle.
Greenery: Gather artificial or real greenery like pine branches, cedar, holly, or eucalyptus. If you're using real greenery, make sure to keep it fresh by spritzing it with water.
Floral Wire: This will be used to secure the greenery to the wreath base.
Decorative Elements: You can add pine cones, berries, ornaments, ribbon, or any other decorative items you like.
Scissors or Pruners: To trim and cut the greenery.
Hot Glue Gun (optional): For attaching small items or securing loose ends
Firstly, prepare your greenery by trimming it into smaller sections. Attach the greenery to the wreath base using floral wire, overlapping branches to cover the entire base evenly. Add decorative elements, such as ornaments and pine cones, using hot glue or floral wire. Optionally, create and attach a bow. Hang the wreath with a piece of ribbon or twine as a hanger. You can also add extra embellishments like glitter or LED lights for a festive touch. Enjoy your beautifully crafted homemade Christmas wreath!
2. Unique String DIY Christmas Tree
Credit: https://www.seattlestagedtosell.com/
Creating a string Christmas tree is a charming and cost-effective DIY decoration for the holiday season. This project allows you to make a unique, personalized Christmas tree using string, twine, or yarn.
The Materials You'll Need are:
Styrofoam or cardboard cone: This will serve as the base of your tree.
String, twine, or yarn: Choose a color that matches your holiday decor theme.
Craft glue or a glue gun: To attach the string to the cone.
Decorative items: Small ornaments, ribbon, beads, or any other decorations you want to add.
Now getting started with the preparation, Gather all your materials and set up your workspace. Make sure you have enough string or yarn to cover the entire cone.
Start by attaching the end of the string to the top of the cone using craft glue or a glue gun. This will be the top of your tree. Begin wrapping the string around the cone, working your way down. You can wrap it tightly for a dense look or leave some gaps for a more textured appearance. Continue until you reach the bottom of the cone. Once you've covered the entire cone with string, use glue to secure the end in place at the bottom of the cone. Now it's time to decorate your string Christmas tree. You can glue on small ornaments, tie ribbon around the tree, or attach beads for extra sparkle. Get creative with your choices and placement.
Lastly, Allow your tree to dry completely. This might take some time, so be patient.
Once your string Christmas tree is dry and your decorations are in place, it's ready to be displayed. You can place it on a table, mantel, or even hang it from the ceiling as a festive ornament.

Rina Kazavchinski
Q: What does Mirage mean to you?
A: 'Mirage' is a celebration of the enigmatic nature of art, a testament to the infinite possibilities of human expression, and a reminder that within the realm of abstraction, every observer finds a personal, intimate connection.
Q: How does your mental health and emotions impact your art?
A: As a deeply emotional painter, I draw inspiration from my personal experiences, whether they are positive or negative emotions. Art serves as my means of self-expression and a way to release these emotions. Frequently, some of my most exceptional creations emerge from the challenges I face in life.
Q:What are your favourite tools to work with?
A: The majority of my artworks are created exclusively using palette knives and specialized painting wedges. This distinctive approach sets my work apart due to its unconventional nature. The process itself establishes a unique connection between me and the painting, enabling me to apply substantial layers of paint, resulting in a rich texture. Furthermore, I have the flexibility to adjust the intensity of my palette strokes, leading to a diverse range of effects. Employing palette knives and other specialized tools yields a sumptuous textural quality, giving the artwork a three-dimensional quality. I find immense satisfaction in paint that protrudes from the canvas, as it offers a highly tactile experience when touched.
Q:Are there any previous milestones that you have been excited about?
A: I am very proud of these milestones: Exhibiting my work at the Winter and Spring 2022 One of A Kind Show, Canada's largest artisan fair, marking my biggest exhibition to date. Selling sold over two hundred original paintings and an impressive array of digital illustrations to collectors across North America as well as Columbia.
Having my artwork prominently featured on the sets of Season 2 & 3 of "Sort Of," a popular television series aired on CBC Gem and HBO Max.
Kirk Sutherland
Q: What does Mirage mean to you? How do your pieces reflect this?
A: By definition a mirage is an optical illusion caused by an atmospheric condition. I believe that this whole dimension is an illusion, and everyone depicts and experiences it uniquely. My paintings function from the same standpoint; they are planes of illusionary depth, much like a mirage.
Q: What is your favourite part of the creative process?
A: I would guess the actual fabrication and execution of using materials while being in a position of flux, which in a sense is the entire art-making process.
Q: How did your post secondary experience at OCADU shape your work?
A: Attending OCADU affected me in a very profound way. In fact, it was seminally vital and shaped who I am and the artist that I would become. Everyday I was in the presence of and instructed by the masters of 20th Century Canadian art. Trailblazers like Gordon Rayner, Graham Coughtry, Robert Hedrick as well as Paul Sloggett, Dan Solomon and Jim Tiley. For 2 years I had the honour to study under the great internationally known colourist Francois Thepot, who generously taught and reinforced the importance of colour theory and creative expression.
Q: When you are teaching, what are some things you hope to highlight to your students? Is there a message or theme you want to leave them with?
A: It is vitally and seminally important that my students gain an understanding of the learning goal that I set and within that reality they learn something about themselves in the process.
In every lesson I reinforce the notion that illusionary depth is the single most important principal within a composition. I also on a daily basis remind my students that there is nothing practical about art and that it functions on a completely different level. Like true unconditional love, art has no logical reason to exist. It holds no practical function in the material world. Its existence is based on a necessary and instinctive set of conditions where there is no pure function. It dwells in the realm of pure desire.
Antonia Furlano
Q: What does Mirage mean to you?
A: Mirage to me is a sense of illusion, something intangible. I believe it actually relates a lot to my work because my style reflects a sense of horizon mirage. As if you know something is there in the distance but what each viewer sees is completely different from one to the next.
Q: As someone who has had many creative channels, including hair styling and home staging, how has this influenced your artistic style?
A: Because I have always been in creative roles, where it is essential to keep up with what is on trend, I tend to mirror that in my art. In my day-to-day as a designer, I see colour, textures and styles that come and go, and I love to paint using the same mentality. I like to make art that I believe will fit well with someone who is similar to me and likes to follow the latest trends and design styles.
Q: You spoke about music being an inspirational part of your creation process, please expand on how you incorporate the music into your art; Do you have a specific genre you like to listen to as you’re creating?
A: I love music. My genres are a wide variety. From the classics that I would listen to as a kid, acoustic covers, 90s hip hop, reggae and Euro dance. Happy songs, sad songs. In a past life, I think I was a musician. Music is a big part of the creative process for me, and it really depends on the mood I am in that day. I title my work after song lyrics I was listening to at the time I was working on that specific piece.
Q: When creating, are there certain colour palettes you lean towards?
A: I do love contemporary art, so I find that I am drawn to more neutral colours. I try to envision the space that my piece might be hanging in. Although I choose more monochrome colours, I do love to add a lot of texture to create depth and shadows within my art. I am a very tactile person, so I try to create art that not only is visually stimulating, but also makes you want to reach out and touch it.
Veronica Blanco
Q: What does Mirage mean to you?
A: Mirage, in my work, represents the interplay between art and nature. It symbolizes the illusionary and ever-changing beauty of the natural world and it also signifies the transformative power of creativity, as I blend my impressions from Australia and Canada to create a unique visual experience.
Q: We love that your work incorporates elements of nature and foliage, what tools do you use to achieve this look?
A: I incorporated elements of nature and foliage into my artwork. My tools include layering washes of colour, which form the foundation of my pieces. Additionally, I utilize organic stencils made from leaves and branches I've collected during my hikes. These stencils introduce organic patterns and textures, creating a seamless connection between my art and the natural environment.
Q: What was the inspiration behind the colour palette you have chosen for this collection?
A: The colour palette for my collection is inspired by my recent trip to Australia and the stunning natural landscapes I encountered there. The captivating hues of an Australian sunrise served as the primary source of inspiration. These colours are intertwined with my experiences in Canadian landscapes, particularly the rich tapestry of foliage like twigs, pinecones, and maple leaves. The chosen palette represents a fusion of Australian and Canadian influences, symbolizing my cross-cultural artistic journey.
Q: You said that you were recently on a trip to Australia, how did this impact your style and creative process?
A: My recent trip to Australia had a profound impact on my artistic style and creative process. It provided me with fresh inspiration from the striking natural landscapes of Australia. The experience allowed me to infuse my work with the colours and compositions of these new surroundings. The Australian landscapes influenced the vibrant colour palette of my collection, and the compositions were drawn from my experiences in Australia. Upon returning to Canada, I merged these Australian inspirations with the rich tapestry of the Canadian landscape, resulting in a unique fusion of artistic styles that captures the essence of both countries.
Deepti Saxena
Q: What does Mirage mean to you?
A: Mirage is an opportunity to share a common platform and a common theme with a group of extraordinarily talented artists. It’s hard to find a common theme in any group show and my abstract art is very much blending with the theme of the show.
Q: What do you hope to express to your audience?
A: My technique is very unique and my abstract art is inspired by the Indian historical monuments and a mix of Indo-Canadian culture. I am sure that visitors will find my artwork unique and interesting.
Q: As someone who has had a life-long artistic journey, how do you feel you’ve grown through your art?
A: Certainly a significant growth, I had an opportunity to exhibit across Canada and on a few occasions internationally - US and India. Because of the unique artwork and the number of shows I have done, I have gained 1000+ organic art lovers who look forward to seeing my new artwork, which I will always be grateful for.
Q: How would you say your cultural heritage influences your art?
A: My current series “Unconditional Love” still pays homage to my Indian roots as I continue to resurrect the historical and architectural impact of these mid-century Indian monuments in my compositions. Now, I approach these beloved monuments purely from memory, where their haunting shapes rise unexpectedly in the form of domes, doors, and Indian traditional patterns as abstract forms in layered and textured compositions. In my works, black charcoal drawings meld with gold patterns deftly reveal the enchanting secrets of Indian history.
Stephen Lecker
Q: What does Mirage mean to you?
A: A mirage is something that you can’t really see and with my art, I don’t start out with a specific vision in mind. The art evolves as I go.
Q: What are the tools you use to create your work?
A: Palette knives, acrylic paint, canvases, paint brushes, found objects to create texture
Q: What are your external sources of inspiration? How do you channel them to create your work?
A:My family, professional life and my eclectic love for music all inform my art.
Q: You said that you have just started to create recently, what did you do before then and how did this inspire you to start creating?
A:Painting is my first major foray into art.
Viktoriia Rusetska
Q: What does Mirage mean to you?
A: Mirage for me is an indefinite space where an image can emerge. The kind of meanings a perceiver would give to these images is a display of individuality.
Evoking feelings is one of art's supreme purposes, thus it's implied that a person lives some emotions when interacting with art. Eventually, in each piece of art, an individual sees something of one's own. I present my work as something to ignite a viewer's personal experience, based on one's cultural background and develop by the means of emotional intelligence tools.
Q: How does your background in psychotherapy influence your artwork?
A: As a psychologist by origin, I reveal and develop concepts of mental and emotional science in my art. In my works, I am focusing on principal emphasis concerning the boundaries which are both limiting and supporting us, captured in a dynamic of a lifetime flow.
The boundaries develop from the practice of interaction between a person and an environment. They emerge as a subject-object interrelation is established. The ongoing engagement is constantly supplied with an impulse to alter the boundaries. Psychological boundaries display the features of a dynamic structure, as something always in motion.
We tend to maintain the integrity of our boundaries because our identity is held within them. At the same time, we strive to expand our boundaries to increase the surface area for intercourse with the surrounding reality. Trying to keep the balance between stability and expansion we face resistance, we accumulate energy and expend resources, we experience tension and we do starve for repose. Furthermore, we analyze, scale and make conclusions, about what makes a common life cycle. Subsequently, we repeat the same mistakes and bet it’s natural, as far as self-awareness is also important in navigating our interpersonal and environmental relationships.
Q: Is there a message or feeling you hope to convey to your audience through your work?
A: I anticipate my audience to recognize in my works some mental and emotional snapshots of a sometimes-elusive bridge from situation to action. I implement the method of returning the line sand layers to their literal meaning after being used in a figurative one.
Q: What is your creative process like? Do you typically start with a vision or message intended?
A: A painting on canvas as a flat surface can be perceived as a metaphor of reduction and simplification in an attempt to record something, existing on invisible levels. Stratification helps to see the components, naming the parts leads to understanding the whole picture, and reflection becomes the basis of self-awareness. I offer my viewer to see something that can be distorted if expressed in words.
Come and experience Mirage firsthand. Our Mirage Exhibit will be available for viewing at Twist from Tuesday to Friday 11:00 am - 6:00 pm and Saturday 11:00 am - 4:00 pm, from now until December 16th!

Each of our artists bring their own distinct view to their work, and we’ve asked each of them a few questions that should highlight how they create their work!
Steph Thompson:
Q: You mentioned that travel is what really sparks your creativity, are there any locations you’ve seen that you felt were particularly inspiring?
Absolutely! I am most inspired when I am awestruck — literally. Wide eyed, jaw-dropping and an emotional welling up in reaction to the beauty of a natural place. The vegas nerve is active! There have been a few places throughout my travels that fill me with this sense of awe — most recently in Chile where I visited Patagonia as well as the Atacama desert. The ice lagoon, Jokulsarlon, in Iceland was majestic, as was flying above the Grand Canyon. As much as I try to capture the beauty of these places through my lens, their sheer size and energy can only be truly witnessed in person.
Q: How do you determine what areas you are going to document? Is that all laid out beforehand, or do you keep it relatively unstructured?
It’s a bit of both. Some of my work is opportunistic — being in the right place at the right time. Other shoots are definitely scoped out ahead of time. I may shoot a bunch of images on my phone and then return when the light is better and with a plan of how I want to capture the subject or area. Some shoots have to be much more deliberate when they require more (and heavier) equipment like my tripod and multiple lenses.
Q: Your work is very calming and meditative, do you feel you need to be in that type of headspace before you start a shoot, or does the beauty of your subjects help you reach that goal?
That’s a great question. It’s more the later. We all know what it can be like when travelling — noisy, hectic, lots of coordinating, people, schedules, etc. But, when I have my equipment with me, I know I’m looking for subjects to shoot. I often will hang back and take my time from others so I can experience the place on my own and see what speaks to me from a subject matter standpoint. That definitely helps focus my headspace to capture the calm amidst the chaos.
Q: Do you find shooting in a non-studio setting to be more stressful due to having so many elements outside of your control, or do you find it liberating?
Liberating! As much as I love shooting people and portrait photography, I see it as an extra layer of pressure because most times there is a client relying on you to ‘get the shot’. Whereas, with nature as my studio, I am the sole conductor among an orchestra of elements — it is up to me to use my lens to create a visual symphony of sorts.
Kaylie Sager:
Q: Much of your work is detailed depictions of foliage. Are these direct recreations or more your interpretation of the beautiful landscapes you come across?
While my paintings are based off of images that I take they are not direct recreations. These are my interpretation of the landscapes that I come across. I use photographs as a starting point and like to put my own artistic spin on the paintings.
Q: What feelings do you hope to convey in your work?
I hope to convey positive emotions including the joy and overall calming effect associated with being on vacation. I aim to create beautiful and serene landscapes that evoke the feeling of being in the tropics.
Q: What is it specifically about tropical landscapes that inspire you?
I am inspired by the organic flowing shapes in the lush foliage and the vibrant colours of the exotic plants and flowers. I love to create images that have a sense of depth to them and use vibrant colours to allow the greenery and flowers to jump out at you.
Q: Do you have a green thumb outside of favoring plants to paint? Are any of your paintings inspired by your own garden?
While I prefer to paint over gardening I do choose to keep an art studio full of different plants. A few of my paintings have been inspired by my own household plants.
Kyle Sorensen:
Q: Could you tell us more about what drew you to your geometric style?
I began painting in this type of geometric style while completing my BFA at York University. It came on rather suddenly, and I think perhaps it was in response to my environment. Being at a university is like living in a city all the time. And, I learned from my time at York that I really can't stand the city; I'm really much more at peace when I'm away from it all. Thinking back, I feel like the hard lines of my artwork and the rigidness of painting with such precision was in reference to the "concrete jungle" that I was spending so much time in. It was mimicking these urban spaces, while at the same time giving me a sense of control over my environment, allowing me to create order where there may not have been. It's been a style that has certainly changed over time. I once chose to concentrate on purely abstract forms, now I much rather the landscape forms that surround me in my new home on Georgian Bay.
Q: Are there any specific challenges that come from reducing complex three dimensional landscapes into two dimensional geometric abstractions?
Absolutely - there is always an internal dilemma of how far I should reduce an image without losing its initial charm. I always strive to reference the essence of a place, rather than to recreate what already exists. And, so my process of reducing the image is never a quick one, however, it's one of the most enjoyable parts of the process for me. I love the simplification process. A sort of push and pull.
Q: You mentioned that your process begins with taking a photo of the subject, then reducing the image into geometric shapes and colours. Is that initial photo planned out in depth, or is it more about capturing the moment and feeling?
The majority of the time I'll begin each painting with a photograph. I then work to reduce this image into geometric shapes and planes. Focusing on depicting a certain element of the photo that first enticed me. Other times, the concept image could be purely fabricated. A collection of images stirring in my head from different seasons, or locations. Either way, the process of planning out each painting is rather time consuming and planned out in depth. This ensures that my brain is happy with the final image and palette before any paint has even hit the canvas.
Q: How do you balance reducing elements of the work to simplified shapes, without eliminating the power or spirit of the moment you’re trying to capture?
This is a question I often ask myself. How abstract can something be without losing the initial power of the image? I find I don't really have a solid answer. There is typically just something that clicks when I'm sketching when I know the image is ready to be painted. Perhaps it's the palette, or the forms, or a combination of how both of them compliment each other. I just typically trust the process and have fun painting!
Jeff Mann:
Q: In your artist’s statement you mention using photography to approach everyday surroundings with a fresh perspective and to see the familiar in a new light. Would you care to elaborate on this process for those wishing to do the same?
Photography, for me, is used to rediscover the beauty in everyday surroundings. This involves mindfulness, perspective shifts, and creative techniques. My recommendation would be to begin by slowing down, observing details, and altering your viewpoint. Experiment with lighting, whether natural or artificial, to transform the familiar. Zoom in on unnoticed details and explore various composition techniques. Try different lenses and filters for unique perspectives and effects. When it comes to editing, I love using Lightroom and Photoshop to bring the initial vision to life. Ultimately, photography is a narrative, so remember to focus on the storytelling within ordinary scenes, conveying emotions and actions that are unfolding. Be open to unexpected moments and practice regularly to refine your creative eye. Embracing this process helps you see the extraordinary within the ordinary and fosters a deeper appreciation of the world around you.
Q: Does your imaginative take on photography ever bleed into your work as a creative director (or vice versa)? Do these two aspects of your life have a symbiotic relationship or do they often clash?
Yes! And no! It's a nuanced situation. My background is in Art Direction, which inherently sharpens my eye for composition. However, the reality of life as a Creative Director is often less wild and spontaneous than one might imagine. In my professional role, I operate within the confines set by brands and clients, which are essential for advertising agencies to produce commercial work.
While I can't deny that my job is creative, it's a different kind of creativity. It's refined and professional, with defined parameters and limited opportunities for unbridled artistic expression. Photography, on the other hand, provides me with a unique outlet for pure creative freedom. It allows me to create for the sake of creation, to make art that resonates with my personal vision, free from the constraints of client requests, input, or revisions. It's a space where I can connect with my inner artist and explore my creative instincts on my terms.
Q: You often utilize a bird’s eye view angle. What unique challenges are brought on by using this perspective in your photography?
The emergence of commercial drones has undeniably revolutionized the field of photography, fundamentally altering how photographers perceive and present the world. Personally, I've enthusiastically embraced aerial photography, both in my local surroundings and during my travels, as it offers fresh perspectives on familiar landscapes. However, it comes with its set of challenges.
Beyond the initial technical learning curve and mastering the intricacies of factors like wind, successful aerial photography demands extensive pre-flight planning and visualization. This preparation is paramount even before you take off. With the constraints of limited battery life and, at times, the necessity for discreet operation, having a clear vision of what you intend to capture from the skies is crucial.
This shift in my approach has compelled me to adopt a more proactive creative process, emphasizing pre-visualization and meticulous planning. It's become imperative to ensure that I can capture the desired shot within the constraints of time and resources. Aerial photography, in this sense, has not only expanded my photographic repertoire but has also elevated the importance of careful planning and foresight in achieving the perfect shot from above.
Q: Your work uses a lot of natural colour, is this what inspires you to capture a specific landscape?
Certainly, here's a more detailed and clearer version:
I must confess that I am deeply immersed in the principles of colour psychology in my professional life, and this orientation significantly informs my personal artistic approach. As a result, I find myself naturally gravitating towards the deliberate selection of colour palettes, intricate colour systems, and the strategic utilization of negative spaces.
My fascination with colour psychology allows me to seek out the perfect equilibrium within my work, often focusing on specific natural colour combinations that adhere to principles like triadic, analogous, split-complementary, or even isolated colour schemes. I firmly believe that this deliberate attention to colour harmony elevates the quality of my images. When colours are thoughtfully chosen and strategically integrated, they harmoniously interact to enhance the overall composition, creating a more compelling and visually pleasing result.
Janet Cozens:
Q: In your artist’s statement, you mentioned that you took nearly two decades off from creating art. Do you feel that this time away has given you a new perspective, as someone who consumed art and didn’t create it for so long?
Art, a dynamic and ever-evolving realm, offers a remarkable quality: it never ceases to transform, even during extended breaks. Whether my hiatus lasts for two decades or a mere two days, there's an undeniable sense of experiencing the world with newfound clarity and fresh perspective.
Q: Your work focuses on not just beautiful landscapes, but also the hidden effects that people have on the landscapes. What encouraged you to document this, and has your perspective on how humans interact with their environment changed at all since you started?
My lifelong fascination with the environment has recently evolved into a profound concern for the far-reaching impacts of climate change. Despite having left the north for over four decades, I find myself returning frequently, bearing witness to the stark transformations wrought by climate shifts and the cascading consequences they unleash. The challenge, I discovered, lay in conveying this transformation without overtly stating it. My passion for vibrant color became the key to this puzzle, guiding me to employ unconventional hues in my landscape works as a nuanced symbol of human influence, even in these seemingly untouched realms. This subtle use of unnatural colors serves as a visual thread connecting the environmental changes I've observed with the broader discourse on our planet's evolving climate, blending my artistic expression with the undeniable presence of humanity in even the most pristine areas.
Q: You mentioned having multiple inspirations to your work. Did you come across all these inspirations before you returned to art, or did your style grow and develop over time as you discovered these new styles/artists?
During my formative years, various artists left a lasting imprint on my creative journey. The Group of Seven, renowned for their depictions of the region, and the active First Nation artists who inhabited the area played pivotal roles in shaping my artistic perspective. However, my artistic horizons expanded exponentially after I relocated to Toronto. Regular visits to the AGO (Art Gallery of Ontario) enriched my appreciation for diverse artistic styles and movements, allowing me to draw inspiration from a broader spectrum of art. Furthermore, my formal studies at the Ontario College of Art (OCA) provided me with a structured foundation, enabling me to explore my creative potential with newfound depth and purpose. These collective influences have converged to form the mosaic of my artistic identity, a reflection of my evolving journey through the ever-inspiring world of art.
Q: You grew up in Northern Ontario. Many of your landscapes appear to match the location of your upbringing. Do you see your resurgence into the world of art as an ode to your childhood?
As a child, I confess I often overlooked the enchantment of my immediate surroundings. However, as I traverse the path toward becoming a full-time artist and embrace a more secluded way of life, I've come to view my paintings as a poignant return to the embrace of Northern Ontario. They symbolize my yearning for a simpler, more nature-centric existence—one that rekindles my deep connection with the serene beauty of the region and renews my appreciation for the uncomplicated joys of life.
Joanne Duklas:
Q: What role does texture play in your work, and what do you hope to convey by having a rougher texture in your landscapes?
Texture is a significant and growing part of my art practice. I’m fascinated by how the different mediums can be pushed to create a layered piece that in turn gives more depth to the final outcome. I’m equally obsessed with pushing paint into wood canvases and seeing how the paint absorbs in, showcasing the grain of the wood. My hope is to convey a feeling of entering into a kind of peaceful space that helps people feel the same calm i experience from the entire process of painting.
Q: You have experience in many different artistic mediums. How do you determine what medium will best convey a specific landscape or subject?
For me it’s kind of an intuitive process. I start to think about a particular view, mentally explore it’s edges, and then get enthused about an approach and canvas substrate. I then start working through a mental unwinding through my hands and paint. Sometimes I want to do something lighter which watercolour just handles so beautifully. Other times, I just need to do something heavier. I don’t worry about being a purist. Been there, done that, and now I kind of take pleasure in not being defined by rules. Plus, the practical realities of all the travel I do requires that I use different mediums such as ink and charcoal. These are much easier to carry on a plane as I often sketch while flying around, including in airports. And sometimes I’m struck by the precise beauty of a view, animal, bird or person and want to pair it with a similarly precise medium like pen and ink.
Q: Do you begin each piece with the finished image already in mind, or is your process more exploratory, focusing on seeing where the art takes you?
Sometimes yes I do have an idea, other times I just start working the paint. The cool think about art is you can layer and create something and then take it in an entirely different direction with no judgement. That creative freedom suits me perfectly.
Q: How do you balance the influences of your imagination and reality in your work? Can it be hard to take on the spontaneity of inspiration?
It’s not hard for me to be spontaneous. Sometimes it is essential for me to design very precise, realistic work. Other times, I’m seeking beauty in the imprecision so focus more on texture and shapes so that your eye does the blending when you step back from the piece. The harder challenge for me is to do one thing over, and over, and over again. There’s limited joy in repetition so I give myself and others the gift of more bespoke approaches. For example, it is amazing working directly with people to align pieces directly to their personalities, decorating style and tastes. It keeps the creative juices flowing and pushes me in ways I would have never imagined.
Saeeda Malick:
Q: Your work architectural based photography has the consistent theme of a hazy glow, despite the difference in composition. How did the journey of developing your signature style unfold?
I’m still discovering my signature style.
For some time now, I’ve been drawn to photography series’ that focus on a single theme or subject. And about a year ago, I decided to incorporate this into my work. This was how the photographs in this current exhibit came together - my desire was to explore and present what I felt was compelling about Singapore’s architecture.
The hazy, glowy treatment was intentionally chosen for this series to communicate to some degree the tropical weather in Singapore, and also how surreal it felt to look at some of these remarkable buildings for the first time.
I expect to try out different themes, subjects and editing techniques with future series’ and perhaps I'll land on a signature style somewhere along the way.
Q: Your work focuses on foliage heavy architecture. Can you explain why the balance between the natural and manmade dominates your work?
I’ve thought about this a lot and I think you’ve hit the nail on the head here - it is all about balance. For these images, it felt natural to lean into this architectural style. However, after this series I’ve photographed architectural and natural landscapes alone, and have been left feeling like something is missing (maybe I’ve just been working on this series for too long lol?). There’s something I find satisfying about a scene where the manmade and natural work off each other - you notice the benefits of one element more in the other’s presence, one flows while the other is still, one in constant growth and the other immutable.
Q: Your photography takes viewers around the world in a single exhibit. What has been your favourite place to shoot? How do you decide where to go next?
Its difficult to narrow down to a favourite place because each location and environment offers unique beauty. If I had to choose, I would say Turkey. A couple of years ago, I spent close to three weeks flying and driving across Turkish cities and towns. The range of landscapes and experiences has been unmatched to date. Driving gave me the freedom to stop anytime a scene caught my eye, whether to photograph or simply to enjoy the moment.
My travel bucket list is lengthy and always growing! Right now, I’m choosing to be guided by my feelings and intuition. The use of colour is something I’m curious about and I would love to do a series exploring this further. So maybe Samarkand, Uzbekistan for its architecture, or floral landscapes like the Hitachi Seaside Park and Furano in Japan or Castelluccio Di Norcia in Italy.
Q: What draws you to capture a specific landscape?
The way it makes me feel and particular aspects of the landscape/scene I find special and would like to share with people

Planning an event in Toronto? There are a lot of factors that influence how much a small event venue will cost in this vibrant city. Whether you're organizing a corporate meeting, a small wedding, a birthday party, or a baby shower, understanding these cost determinants can help you make an informed decision that aligns with your budget and event goals.
In this comprehensive guide, we examine the factors affecting the cost of renting a small event venue in Toronto, such as the venue's size, location, event type, and season. We also provide practical tips to help you navigate the venue rental process, ensuring a successful and memorable event. Let's examine these factors in more detail.
Factors That Affect the Cost of Renting a Small Event Space Venue in Toronto
Following are some factors that affect the cost of renting a small event space venue in Toronto:
Size of the Event Venue
The size of the event venue is a significant element in determining how much it will cost to rent. Larger venues that can hold hundreds of participants will typically be more expensive than smaller event spaces with a capacity of 20 to 50 persons. Consider the number of guests you plan to invite when choosing the size of the event space you need, and make sure the location can hold them all comfortably.
Location of the Event Space
The cost of the event space is greatly influenced by its location. Due to their accessibility, proximity to services, and visual appeal, event spaces located in high-demand areas, such as downtown Toronto or hip districts, may have a higher price tag. If you're looking for venues that might be more economical without sacrificing quality, consider venues in nearby neighbourhoods or regions that are a little outside of the city centre.
Type of Event
The rental price may vary depending on the kind of event you're hosting. Depending on the services and amenities needed, corporate events, weddings, and milestone celebrations may have varied cost structures. While corporate gatherings may place a greater emphasis on conference spaces and audiovisual equipment, wedding venues frequently provide entire packages that include catering, décor, and other services.
Day of the Week and Time of the Event
The rental price can vary greatly depending on the day of the week and the time of the event. The demand for social gatherings is often higher on weekends and in the evenings, which may result in higher costs. You might be able to lower your event costs by holding it on a weekday or outside of peak hours.
Duration of the Event
The price of venue rental may vary depending on how long your event lasts. While some venues for events have hourly rates, others provide packages based on the length of the event. To accurately estimate the total cost, consider the amount of time you will need for the venue, including setup and teardown.
Inclusions and Amenities
As a part of their leasing packages, event spaces may provide a variety of items and facilities. These can range from more fundamental products like tables, chairs, and linens to more opulent ones like lighting, audiovisual equipment, and specialized event organizers. In order to evaluate the value and applicability of the items and amenities, you should examine them in detail.
Catering and Bar Services
The total cost will probably be affected if the event location provides on-site catering or bar services. The planning process can be made simpler by bundling the price of food and beverages with the rental charge at venues providing on-site catering. If you have particular culinary tastes, you should consider the menu selections, the calibre of the food, and whether outside catering is permitted.
Seasonal Factors
The price of renting out event space may vary depending on the season. Prices may be higher at busy times of year like the spring and summer when more people attend weddings and outdoor events. On the other hand, off-peak times like the winter could have lower prices. When organizing your event, take the season into account to potentially reduce the rental cost.
Additional Staff and Services
Some event venues offer additional staff and services, including event organizers, security guards, coat check volunteers, and cleaning staff. These services could be bundled with the rental price or offered as extras for a fee. Analyze the demands of your event and adjust your budget.
Parking & Transportation
Parking spaces and your visitors' transportation options may also affect the cost of your event. While venues in more accessible locations may have nearby parking lots or public transportation choices, those with on-site parking may charge for this service. Take into account the costs and convenience for your attendees.
Hidden Fees and Taxes
Carefully read the paperwork before signing any rental agreement for an event location to look for any hidden fees or taxes that might not be immediately obvious. Service fees, tips, cleaning costs, and applicable taxes are a few examples. It is important to maintain open contact with the venue in order to avoid any unpleasant surprises.
Negotiation and Flexibility
Don't be afraid to bargain with the event space management if you have budgetary restrictions or if you are willing to be flexible about certain aspects of your event. Many places are willing to talk and may give discounts or create special packages for you.
Tips to Rent a Small Event Space Venue in Toronto
Finding the ideal small event space venue in Toronto that fits your concept and provides enough space for your guests is the first step in event planning success. The process of booking a small event space can be made simpler with these useful recommendations, regardless of whether you're planning an intimate gathering, a corporate meeting, a baby shower, or a birthday celebration:
Start Early and Plan Ahead
Early planning is crucial while looking for the ideal event location. If your event is taking place during a busy time of year or on a popular day, start your search far in advance to secure availability. Making plans in advance also offers you more time to weigh your alternatives, bargain with venues, and get the best deals.
Determine Your Budget
Before beginning the venue search, decide on a certain budget for the leasing of the event space. Not only the rental fee should be taken into account, but also any additional costs you may incur, such as catering, décor, and any additional services. You can reduce your alternatives and avoid overspending if you have a set budget.
Define Your Event's Requirements
Make a list of the amenities and features that are a requirement for your event. Think of things like the expected attendance, seating arrangements, audiovisual needs, and any particular preferences you may have for the venue's atmosphere. You may choose a location that meets your demands by having a clear grasp of the needs of your event.
Visit Multiple Venues
Don't just rely on online research. To get a feel for the atmosphere and layout of various small event locations in Toronto, schedule site visits. You may compare options, picture how your event will appear in each location, and make a more informed choice by touring many sites.
Read Reviews and Testimonials
Read reviews and testimonials from past customers who have booked the venues you're thinking about by looking them up online. Their opinions can offer insightful information about the level of responsiveness and general experience at the venue. You might feel confident in your decision if you read favourable testimonials from happy consumers.
Inquire About Customization
Find out if the event venue allows you to create rental packages that are suitable for your event. You may be able to customize the bundle at some venues by adding or removing specific services. With customization, you can maximize the benefit of your rental.
Consider Package Deals
Examine venue packages that include catering, decorations, and other services. The planning process can be streamlined and time and effort spent independently coordinating various parts can be saved by using these package agreements. Review the package specifics to make sure they fit your requirements.
Review the Contract Thoroughly
Carefully check the contract before confirming the rental. Pay close attention to information like the cost of the rental, the due date, the cancellation policy, and any other costs or taxes. Before you sign the agreement, make sure you understand all the conditions and that you are comfortable with them.
Be Transparent with Guest Count
Give the venue a precise headcount to make sure the room can accommodate everyone comfortably. The venue can better plan the setup, seating, and other requirements for a smooth event with accurate attendance data.
In Conclusion
Renting small event space in Toronto offers a myriad of possibilities for creating unforgettable experiences. Size, location, event type, day and time, features, catering, and seasonal demand are just a few examples of the variables that might affect a venue's price. You may discover the ideal event space that meets your ideas and budget with careful preparation, open communication with the venue, and flexibility in your approach.

Antonia Questions and Answers
A bit about Antonia:
Antonia Furlano is an abstract painter who grew up in the small town of Barrie, Ontario. Her dream was always to move to Toronto, where she now lives, to pursue a career in art. Her passion for creativity began early on in her life, taking drawing and painting lessons throughout her adolescence. She was classically trained in acrylic and watercolour, specializing in realism. She continued her education by pursuing Fine Art in college, where she developed an inquiring mind for abstract and pop art.
While she began as a classical painter, her curiosity has recently led her to explore a variety of techniques and mixed media. She experiments with stencils and spray paint, among other mediums, pushing the boundaries of her art. Over the course of her career, she has worked in several creative positions, such as hair styling, home staging, and interior design, infusing her unique artistic lens into every project.
Q: You mention naming your work after song lyrics. Is there a specific type of song that might be more likely to inspire you artistically speaking, and how do you incorporate this into your work?
A: I love music. My genres are a wide variety. From the classics that I would listen to as a kid, acoustic covers, 90s hip hop, to reggae and euro-dance. Happy songs, sad songs. Music is a big part of the creative process for me, and it really depends on the mood I am in that day. I title my work after song lyrics I was listening to at the time I was working on that specific piece.
Q: Have your experimentations with various mediums and techniques ever surprised you or led you to making something completely different than what you had initially conceptualized?
A: Yes! I still feel as though I’m evolving my style. As a classically trained painter, abstract was so foreign to me. I never knew where to start and when to finish. I might start with one idea in my mind, and then finish in a completely different direction. So much of my work relies on how the paint splatters on the canvas, and how it dries. After it dries, hours, sometimes days go by and I see something totally different from when it first hit the canvas. I am also really drawn to street art and pop art, which is why I use an influence of spray paint stencils and pops of neon.
Colleen Questions and Answers
A bit about Colleen:
Colleen is an abstract artist living in Toronto, Canada. She has always been involved in some form of creative pursuit, and for many years has built a career in visual merchandising. Once Colleen had her daughters, she actively involved them in the arts and encouraged them to be creative. They’ve had more “art days” than she can count. Just over a year ago, Colleen felt a creative void and a strong desire to express and escape through art. Painting was exactly what she needed.
Q: You mention the importance of the initial colour you choose. What is the journey in selecting the first colour? Is it just “flow”, as you put it, or is it more deliberate?
A: The initial colour I choose tends to gravitate towards either earthy tones or cool blues and greens. These two choices are heavily influenced by my love of the lush landscapes of Great Britain (where I spent most of my summers as a kid) and the ocean. Generally, my first colour is planned but what happens next is completely intuitive and flow. The end result of a painting is almost always a surprise to me. There are many times a painting starts off as one colour direction and ends up somewhere very different.
Q: You address how no two people see the same painting the same. Would you hope for there to be a specific takeaway from your art, or do you leave that completely up to the audience’s interpretation?
A: I love the fact that no one “sees” the same painting, especially in regards to abstract. A perfect example is when I show my own family a finished piece, they all see something very different. Some paintings appeal to them more than others. I have always loved buying art from various artists.I’m a big believer in something “speaking to me”. My hope is that my art “speaks to someone” out there and they see what their imagination reveals to them.
Q: Has your intuition ever completely surprised you when leading you throughout your artistic process?
A: My intuition constantly surprises me while painting. Whether it’s the colours I choose, the tools I select or the markings made. When I started my painting journey I was drawn to very watery flows but as you can see from this collection, it is very different. My intuition took me on this journey. I’d love my art to evoke emotions and memories in the viewer. It’s inspiring to see their interpretation.
Rahul Questions and Answers
A bit about Rahul:
A pediatrician by vocation and painter by passion, Rahul was born in India into a highly educated family. Inspired by his family’s dedicated pursuit of knowledge, Rahul continued the tradition by enrolling in medical school. After gaining his medical degree, he began practicing medicine and found his calling in the field of pediatric sciences. His chosen field took him across the globe, allowing him to work with people from diverse backgrounds.
After working in Australia for a number of years, he moved to Canada almost nine years ago. Along with being a practicing physician, Rahul is also an associate professor at Western University and has found a strong avidity for teaching. While his exceptional skills as a doctor and enthusiasm for his profession are made evident by a proven track record, Rahul has a passion for the arts that is boundless and ingrained in his core.
Throughout his academic and medical career, Rahul has carried an innate talent and strong ardor for painting with him. What began as a hobby and creative outlet eventually took the form of professional pursuit of the arts, specifically abstract art. His oeuvre is a reflection of his thoughts and variant emotions, representing his belief in colours being a central part of all living and non-living beings.
Q: You mention having trotted the globe. How do you take inspiration from your travels and incorporate it into your work?
A: Travel is a meaningful way to open your eyes to new practices and ways of making and creating. Different ways of life, beliefs, and values influence one’s creativity. My creations are a reflection of my cultural experience and geographic contexts traveling across the globe, which offers any beholder a sight worth more than what meets the eye.
Q: Your statement mentions enthralling the human psyche. What do you hope for your audience to feel and take away when they see your art?
A: I believe, every colour has a meaning – it speaks of something – and when many colours blend it has a language, a language that has nothing to do with realism or perfectionism. It’s just so powerful, and that is where my art (abstract) is born. I direct these colorful, bold, and boundless abstract languages onto canvas and try to connect to people with an aim to sooth, to heal, to energize, and help them search for inner peace and tranquility, and give life a real meaning.
Q: Your work features very bright colours. What draws you to a brighter palette as opposed to a more muted one?
A: I believe bright colors equate to a state of being full of energy and life. My thoughts and varying emotions represent my belief in bright colours which I feel is a central part of all living beings and non-living objects. I love working with bright, sparkling colors & textures to create bold, vibrant and colorful abstract art.
David’s Response
A bit about David:
David Bastedo is a dynamic Canadian multi-disciplinary artist whose mediums include painting, sculpture, and photography. His lively, often vibrant creations exemplify self-expression and self-discovery, mirroring his personality and life experiences, while encapsulating his youthful spirit, creative curiosity, and pursuit of emotional release. Driven by a love for colour and the delight it evokes, Bastedo challenges himself by continually pushing his boundaries and experimenting with new techniques and motivations which serve as a positive channel within him, promoting his ongoing artistic growth.
After a prominent career in photography and digital art, Bastedo’s return to painting marks a transition to a more tactile experience; a process that is deeply introspective and serves as a reflection and a response to his lived experiences and environment.
During the pandemic, Bastedo sought to re-establish his connection with the analog and sensory nature of art. His creations function both as an outlet and a representation of his personal journey; characterized by continuous evolution and transformation, demonstrating the formidable power of creative expression. As an Artist, Bastedo exhibits his passion and skills, encouraging individuals to stay true to their own interests and appreciate their own journey and sense of artistic adventure.
Q: You mention that you are a multi-disciplinary artist. When working with one medium such as painting, do you ever incorporate your skills and artistic journeys with other mediums into that specific process? How?
A: I like colour. Pinks and greens remind me of my youth. Yellow and orange make me think of my dad. I want to live with colour. It brightens an otherwise dull day. Life is colourful. Full of texture and contrast. I like to bring these elements into my work. My father used words like a surgeon uses a scalpel. You can communicate almost everything with the alphabet and numbers - but not quite. You can do more with numbers than the alphabet - just a zero and a one is all you really need… sometimes I encrypt words into my paintings. I like the idea of hiding something in plain site.
Q: Your statement mentions that you deem a piece of work to be complete when it is able to sufficiently evoke happiness or the mitigation of unpleasant emotions. Can you elaborate on the parameters of this and how this applies across the board to various people?
A: Many of us have anxieties and hang ups, disappointments that follow us through life; economic and social expectations that we cannot seem to live up to, no matter what we do and how hard we try. We lose touch with what is actually important. Our friends and family. The things that bring us joy and contentment. What makes us feel alive. What brings us peace. What calms us. Creating, painting, taking pictures, making things, is what brings me joy. I had always known it, but never acknowledged it. Never found absolute contentment in the things I was doing. I had stopped painting for a long time. I began to paint again as a way to cope with the internal and external forces that were upon me. I paint with passion and love in my heart. My work is really an expression of my heart. An examination of my inner thoughts, confrontation of fears and anxieties. I mostly work in silence. I start with a feeling and match it with a complementary colour and then apply that feeling and idea and the urges that go with it to the canvas. I work in layers. Each layer is an expression of the moment. Sometimes I paint words into a painting. What I am feeling, something that moves me. A question. A fantasy. Often, I will write these words overtop of one another until the individual letters are no longer recognized - enabling me to lift the confines of my own self-judgment. Metaphorically, these become boxes of my secrets. Some layers are drastic. An act of self-destruction. I try to face my fears when I paint. To overcome angst, fear of failure, fear of success even - what is good enough - to push my boundaries, my feeling of safety. Above all else, I paint for joy and to learn about myself and to find happiness and contentment in my daily life.
A work is complete when it no longer bothers me. When I am at peace with it.
Q: What is the artistic inspiration behind your choice of brush strokes?
A: I like to paint in a few different styles. Each requires different rhythms and neurosis. I only use a couple of different sized brushes. I keep them until they fall apart. Sometimes I like to be repetitive. I like the monotony of it. .. reminds me of tree planting which I did out west for five seasons. I like to put a big blob of white paint on the canvas and then use a palette to spread it around. This is both destructive - covering up my work, my words and my thoughts - but also creative - forcing me to reexamine, start again, not give up, overcome a challenge. Sometimes I stare at a painting for a long time before I am moved to make one stroke or addition while at other times, it can flow for hours.

process. Kirk Sutherland is also known for working with the Hollywood Film Industry, creating and designing public art in urban environments and working with the music industry creating album cover designs.
Q: You mention surrendering a degree of control in your art. How does this play into your artistic process?
A: I suppose it's partly an intuitive reality or even an act of spontaneity to a degree. On the other hand, surrendering is also a deliberate and conscious decision I tend to make, for the purposes of not dwelling in the realm of the contrived. Call it my “Higher-Self”, calibrating with the elements and gravity, perhaps.
Q: How do you decide on the colour palettes for your pieces?
A: I was born with a phenomenon called synesthesia. I acknowledge and witness colour uniquely. I have a tendency to crave colours in a very flavourful way. With that being said I am seminally interested in the juxtaposition of colours and illusionary depth within the picture plane.
Q: What do you hope for your audience to take away from your work? What emotions do you wish to inspire in them?
A: Art making is an unilateral act of individuality. With this being said I see great importance in having my art viewed and experienced. For within the realm of freewill each individual perceives and witnesses every aspect of this dimension uniquely. As an artist I have no expectation when it comes to my audience. If anything I create paintings that are void of narrative and dwell metaphysically in the unseen world. It's a paradoxical scenario, but energetically or otherwise I believe art can heal and allow for us to be grounded or dwell in the ethereal sphere.
Liz Questions and Answers
A bit about Liz:
Liz aka Ela, is a self taught abstract artist known for her vibrant & joyful paintings. After experiencing a heart attack in 2018, she turned to painting as a way to ease anxiety and depression.
Inspired by the beauty of the world around her, she creates abstract pieces that are bursting with colour and energy. Her work is a celebration of life, an expression of the joy & resilience of the human spirit.
Q: You seem to heavily favour the colour red in your work. What inspires this choice of palette?
A: I’m inspired by bright colours -- especially red as it is very symbolic of passion, love and life!
Q: There are a lot of square and rectangular shapes in your work. What does this signify and what do you hope for the audience to feel when looking at this?
A: Squares to me symbolize doors or windows. Entryways to another perspective. What’s beyond those doors? What do the windows look at? I’m essentially asking the viewer to look beyond the surface. Beyond the obvious. Ask questions. Be curious.
Q: Your statement mentions celebrating human life, joy, and resilience. Are there any experiences which have particularly inspired you up to this point?
A: Well, the biggest and most powerful experience that led me to this state was of course surviving a “widowmaker” heart attack with barely any symptoms. Nothing can get you to appreciate every little moment in life more so than being on death’s door and being saved. It’s truly humbling. That experience alone fuelled me to start painting, to learn meditation, to become more aware of life and how truly blessed I am. It’s been quite the journey since then!
Iman Questions and Answers
A bit about Iman:
Iman is an abstract painter intrigued by the parallels of communication. Through vibrant color palettes and layers, she captures emotions found within situations of interpersonal and intrapersonal communication. From a line of artists, she uses her diverse cultural backgrounds and degree in communications to story-tell and bridge worlds together.
Q: How do you incorporate your various cultural influences into your artistic process?
A: My background has really inspired me to cultivate my current styles. I’ve felt motivated to continue to reach from what I have seen regarding textures, palettes, shapes and patterns, to create a blend and explore further. It gives me the freedom to create new, especially in terms of my painting styles. Just as individuals have unique sides to them from their backgrounds and influences, I gravitate toward showcasing that in the form of layers.
Q: Can you describe some of the abstract emotions that you wish to encapsulate in your artwork?
A: In the process of painting, I’m drawn toward building narratives and storytelling. I feel that artworks I’ve been drawn to show a perspective I wasn’t previously familiar with and I become connected to after. In my works, “Bittersweet”, “Time Is No Full Circle” and “No Strings”, each share emotions of contentment. Contentment for me may come after more ranging emotions and brings a sense of peace. Painting the feeling of contentment comes with striking a balance on the canvas, and in “No Strings” contentment came from seeing a situation for what it is, which meant more unified shapes on canvas.
